As many of you know, on September 7, Oaxaca’s Isthmus of Tehuantepec was shaken by a strong earthquake. Numerous communities, such as Juchitan, Niltepec, Union Hidalgo, Matias Romero, Ixtepec, El Espinal, Ixtaltepec, San Mateo del Mar, among others, sustained infrastructure damage, loss of homes, public buildings, and sadly some lives.
Many of our travelers have been to this singular cultural region of Oaxaca, known for the strong and beautiful women who live there, the stunningly beautiful “traje” (dress) with colorful, densely embroidered flowers on velvet, tropical fruits such as mangoes and pineapples, sweet mole sauce known as “mole Istmeno” or “mole de fiesta”, sweetened by plantains.
On September 7, this sweet land and its people were rocked by a strong earthquake that has altered their physical landscape. We know they will rebuild and be stronger than before, but in the meantime they need some support.
We’re organizing a “support the artisan” and disaster relief auction designed to:
How does it work?
We have selected representative items and have made arrangements with artisans to provide special fundraiser pricing, for them to make a fair price, while funds are raised for relief efforts. You select the item/s you would like and send us the money via our secure Pay Pal Me Link.
There is no fee taken out when you use this link. Payments will be sent to our field representatives who live in Oaxaca City, Tehuantepec, Juchitan and San Mateo del Mar. They are on-the-ground, identifying the needs and helping to support first hand.

Thank you to EVERYONE for supporting this initiative to help our friends and communities damaged and recovering from the recent earthquake in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Money will go to short term and even longer term needs. Now, the needs are:
We’ll follow up with each of you to let you know where and how the monies collected are being used. Note: we are identifying some of the further out, smaller communities that are not getting as much media attention and attention. We plan to run this for the rest of 2017 and all of 2018, as we know the rebuilding will take many months. And, we will be adding more items from Xochistlahuaca, Guerrero and San Mateo del Mar, Oaxaca, so you will want to keep checking in! The amount you pay covers: artisan remuneration, community support and a small amount for shipping to you, once we get your pieces!
